Russell Westbrook made a bit of history last night on his quest to catch Oscar Robertson for the most triple doubles in a season with 41. With his 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists on Thursday in a win over the mighty Spurs, Russ tied hall of famer, Wilt Chamberlain for the second most triple doubles in an NBA season with 31.
The way Russ is going he will likely own the second spot all to himself within the next couple days. I really hope fans don’t diminish just how hard it is to do what Russ is doing just because he makes it a norm. Wilt had his 31 triple doubles back in the 1967-68 season but Russ is already at that number and still has 17 games left to catch Oscar and the magic number of 41 that he did back in 1961-62.
At the moment, Russ is averaging 32.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Most Triple-Doubles in Single Season
1961-62 Oscar Robertson 41
2016-17 Russell Westbrook 31
1967-68 Wilt Chamberlain 31— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) March 10, 2017
For most of the season, he really hasn’t wanted to address all his triple doubles as he prefers to focus on how the team plays when reporters speak with him but even Russ was able to stop and enjoy the moment for a second after the win over the Spurs.

For any naysayers out there who believe Russ is doing too much and trying to hard for his numbers, let me remind you that in his 31 triple double games, the Thunder are 25-6 as opposed to 13-23 when he doesn’t.
The final few weeks of the regular season will be very exciting as we watch him chase the record and potentially an MVP award.
