Five people were killed Friday after a shooter opened fire, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. Eight people were wounded and the shooter was taken into custody. The gunman shot randomly into a crowd in a lower floor of Terminal 2 as panicked travelers took cover behind chairs. The only time he stopped is when he ran out of bullets. The suspected shooter is 26-year-old Esteban Santiago who had a military ID on him.
Santiago arrived from a Canada flight, grabbed his luggage and began shooting. According to federal guidelines, passengers are allowed to check unloaded guns in a locked case, and also ammunition is allowed to be placed in checked baggage. 53-year-old Mark Lea says,
“At first we thought it was firecrackers. Everyone started screaming and running.”
He went on to say,
“Once he finished shooting, he walked down by Door 2, threw his gun on the ground, and laid down on the ground, spread-eagle, until the first officer came — which was probably a minute later. He was not shot at all, was not wounded.”
I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running.
