Hairstylist Ijan Jarrett was on his way home from his New Jersey job when he became the victim of a hate
crime. While on his way to the Bronx, two woman boarded a train. Being a gentleman, Jarrett offered one of them his seat.
Jarrett says,
“The heavy-set girl was standing over me. I asked her, ‘Would you like to sit next to your friend?’ She said, ‘Oh no, no. I’m good,'”
The woman who has been reported as Stephanie Pazmino turned to her friend and said,
“I don’t want to sit next to a black person,”
Jarrett says he remember hearing the word “Negro” some where along the way. He says he got up to avoid confrontation and said, “okay, you don’t have to sit next to me.” As the train arrived to 125th Street in Harlem, Jarrett says he was punched in the head. He had no idea he was even being stabbed until someone told him.
“She stabbed me right under my left eye, on the back of my hand and on my left arm. She was screaming and hollering the whole time. I don’t know why she did it, because I didn’t do anything to provoke her.”
Jarrett received 100 stitches. The attacker was taken into custody at the scene. Stephanie Pazmino’s attorney, Elsie Chandler says her client acted in self defense because Jarrett tried to take her eyes to with his fingers. Chandler says,
This was an unfortunate incident on the subway at Christmas time where lots of people lose their tempers,”
The judge was not trying to hear this. Pazmino was charged with second degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
