Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins was automatically ejected late in the Kings’ 126-121 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night. The refs then rescinded the second technical and Cousins came back out. After the game, he began to go on a rant before the sound was suddenly cut off.
Cousins was fouled by Mason Plumlee as he scored with 35 seconds left to put the Kings up 121-119. He turned and appeared to say something to the Blazers’ bench, and his mouthguard flew out of his mouth. Refs thought he spit the mouthguard out and issued a technical foul, his second of the night, resulting in an automatic ejection. Cousins sprinted off the court to avoid doing anything stupid.
Then in a shocking twist, the refs conferred and decided Cousins did not spit or throw the mouthguard, it simply fell out of his mouth. They rescinded the tech and allowed him to come back in the game. Cousins finished with a season-high 55 points along with 13 rebounds.

After the game, Cousins told CSN California in a fiery on-court postgame interview that his mouthguard came out accidentally, and he called the ejection “ridiculous.”
“It’s ridiculous,” he said. “It’s obvious what’s being done out here. It’s on a nightly basis. I hope the world can see now what’s really going on out here ’cause it’s getting ridiculous. It’s really ridiculous.”
As he continued the interview, the sound suddenly went off.
Many believed that the broadcast cut off his mic or the team had something to do with it, especially since he JUST received a $50,000 fine by his team for yelling at a Sacramento Bee columnist.
The woman that was interviewing Cousins, however, wrote on Twitter that it was a connection issue.
The mic was NOT cut. Trust me, on TV you don’t cut away from something like that. Issue was battery pack connection being jostled loose https://t.co/f3bf7u5mrs
