ISIS has just claimed responsibility for the Christmas attack in Berlin. Authorities are now saying saying they have no idea who was behind the wheel in the attack. 12 people were killed and 48 were injured. The man they thought to be the suspect has now been released. There was not enough evidence to keep him in custody.
The ISIS-affiliated Amaq news agency says the attack was carried out by “a soldier of the Islamic State.” CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank says,
“They’re really back to square one in terms of this investigation. … It may well be a scenario of a manhunt, a race against time to arrest this individual before they can strike again,”
Germany’s general prosecutor also released a statement saying,
“The results of the investigation thus far have not produced imminent suspicion against the accused.”
