Richard Sherman has been writing a piece for The Players Tribune every Thursday this season and will continue to do so. In his most recent post, Sherman touches on things such as challenging people to take more action, rather than just talk about creating change, as well as teaching our kids as parents to have respect for everyone. Those type of things were on his mind after a discussion he had with his fiancee’s niece and nephew after Donald Trump was elected president.

“Just recently, my fiancée’s niece and nephew came over to our house, and they were telling us about a couple of their friends, fellow elementary school students. One of their friends is Native American and the other is Muslim. This was around last week’s election, when Donald Trump became president-elect, and these kids were worried about being deported.”
“It’s unfortunate that we live in a time when our president-elect is the opposite of an example for our children,” Sherman wrote. “He will be one of those external factors that parents will have to combat—an example of somebody we don’t want our kids to talk like or emulate.”
Sherman wasn’t blaming Trump for all of it though. He also recognized that every adult needs to play a role in what children hear and see, saying that even television can impact what children believe to be true.
The Trump campaign brought racism and bigotry front and center and made alot of people show their true colors and remind us that hate is more prevalent than ever in our country. Sherman just wants everyone to do better but especially those people in positions of power who can have the biggest impact on the youth, including people like himself.
