Another legendary player has decided it’s time to hang his jersey up. Ray Allen announced his retirement in a letter to his younger self on The Players’ Tribune, a series where athletes reflect on their biggest lessons learned, from finance to relationships and careers.
41-year old Allen hasn’t played since the 2013-14 season, but over the last two years, he’s received interest from a number of championship contending teams looking to add the sharpshooter to their roster. LeBron James took a few members of his crew from the Miami Heat and wanted to add Allen as well. Allen left everyone in suspense as he flirted with the idea of retirement or coming back to grab one more ring. In the end, he never got back on the court.
The 10-time All-Star will end his storied 18-year career as a two-time NBA champion, the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made (2,973), and one of the best pure shooters in the game. He has enough on his resume that will ensure his enshrinement into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. In the post, Allen says he “is completely at peace with himself.”
Plus, he’ll always be Jesus Shuttlesworth.
