Many people consider the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers as the only two teams really contending for the NBA title this year, but bettors are taking a chance on the New York Knicks on the hopes that just maybe, they’ll pull off a miracle.
via ESPN:
The Knicks opened as 100-1 longshots to win the title at the Westgate, but have been bet down to 60-1. They are all the way down to 20-1 at MGM sportsbooks.
The bets on the Knicks aren’t very big, but there are lots of them. MGM assistant sportsbook manager Jeff Sherman said the average ticket on the Knicks is $25.
The Knicks haven’t made the playoffs since 2013, which is also the same year they finally got to the second round after an even longer drought. Last season they finished at a lowly 32-50, but there are renewed hopes after Knicks president Phil Jackson revamped the roster in the offseason, adding Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee to go along with Carmelo Anthony and promising young player Kristaps Porzingis.
New York opens the season tonight against the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers, who are the second favorites at 11-4. The San Antonio Spurs are next at 6-1 and the Warriors are 2-3; they will face off against each other tonight as well. No other team has odds in the single digits.
