Nate Parker’s The Birth of A Nation debuted in theaters over the weekend, but despite its important and powerful message, it failed to deliver at the box office.

On top of missing out on the number one spot to Girl On The Train, it also only grossed $7.1 million of its projected $10 million opening weekend revenue. In contrast, the film was a hit when it debuted at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January, with Fox Searchlight Pictures buying worldwide rights to the film in the largest deal at the festival to date with $17.5 million. It also won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.

One issue was the amount of theaters it was available in, at only 2,105. Another was Parker’s 1999 rape trial that may have swayed viewers not to see the film, and then there was Hurricane Matthew, affecting some parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
