The Santa Clara police union has informed the San Francisco 49ers that they may boycott the team unless something is done over Colin Kaepernick’s comments and protest. The boycott would mean that security at the stadium for home games would be severely limited since about 70 officers from the Santa Clara department work at Levi’s Stadium during games.

The letter, obtained by NBC Bay Area, states that if the 49ers do not discipline Kaepernick, “it could result in police officers choosing not to work at your facilities.”

The letter also states that “the Santa Clara Police Officers’ Association has a duty to protect its members and work to make all of their working environments free of harassing behavior.”

Kap has tried to clarify what his protest means and insists it’s more about wanting to see change than being anti-police. He has also pledged to donate $1 million dollars to charities of his choosing to prove he is putting his money where his mouth is.

“Once again, I’m not anti-American,” Kaepernick said. “I love America. I love people. That’s why I’m doing this. I want to help make America better. I think having these conversations helps everybody have a better understanding of where everybody is coming from.”

Still with that said, the police union criticizes what it called anti-police statements made by Kaepernick, calling them “insulting, inaccurate and completely unsupported by any facts.” The letter also went on to say that Kap’s comments have “threatened our harmonious working relationship” with the 49ers.

According to the union, about one-third of the officers who work during 49ers games are from other Bay Area law enforcement departments. If Santa Clara’s police officers refuse to work, others officers might be hired. But, Saunders said, that may create a conflict with the city’s contract with the police union

The 49ers first home game is on Monday, September 12th. Should be interesting.
