In an interview on Rap Radar’s podcast, L.A. Reid, the chairman and CEO of Epic Records has confirmed that a new album should be coming from A Tribe Called Quest.
He told hosts Elliot Wilson and Brian “B. Dot” Miller that it was recorded before Phife Dawg’s passing so it’s really special to them.
“We have A Tribe Called Quest album coming,” he says. “I’m really excited about that. It’s an album that they recorded before Phife passed away. And I’m really happy about it. It’s really something special.”
L.A. Reid said that it was mainly Q-Tip’s idea to come together and make the album.
“We have a long relationship,” he says. “Q-Tip is a real friend, man. We didn’t hang out and take pictures and act Hollywood. He’s a real friend, you know? And he’s made some incredible music and I love it. And Phife is there. Jarobi—the whole group. The entire group. It’s great, too.”
The group hasn’t dropped a project since 1998’s ‘The Love Movement’. There has been a couple times where fans thought the group would reunite for another song or album. Well now it’s for sure coming. There isn’t a set date on it yet but L.A. Reid said expect it “very soon”.
