Both Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving received flack for saying an NBA championship and Olympic gold medal are pretty much the same. Anthony caught more flack since he’s never won an NBA title before. Fellow Team USA teammate DeAndre Jordan went even further and said an Olympic gold medal is better than an NBA championship.
“I think they’re above NBA rings,” Jordan told ESPN of the gold medal USA Basketball is chasing here in Rio entering Wednesday night’s quarterfinal game against Argentina.
“I may get in trouble for saying that, but I believe that. I feel like this is more special. You’re not just playing teams in the U.S. You’re playing teams from all over the world. And this is even more special because there’s an NBA champion crowned every year, but this is every four years.
“You’ve got to really think about that, man, because it’s extremely special.”
Jordan is right in saying he may get in trouble for that statement. Like Anthony, he’s never won an NBA championship before. Even worse, he’s never even made it to an NBA Finals. But like Kyrie said, it’s his opinion and he’s entitled to one.
