Yikes, former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dahntay Jones may have won a championship ring in June, but July was a bad month. Not only did the Cavaliers waive him, but he also lost 200 sneakers in July because his prized shoe collection was auctioned off and he’s of course pissed.
Jones kept 208 pairs of rare Nikes in a storage facility in Atlanta for years. They weren’t just any old kicks, some of the sneakers were ultra-rare including sample kicks made especially for Fat Joe.
The storage facility claims Jones was late on his payments, so last week they auctioned off the contents, and the winning bid was around $4,000. That’s a lot of money but those sneakers are obviously worth way more.
TMZ Sports says they spoke with Jones who admits he was late on his payments, but he says it was a simple mix-up that could have been easily corrected without having to unload his sneakers.
Jones says his credit card stopped making payments to the facility due to a possible fraud alert (that happens sometimes), but he says he contacted the facility and told them he would come up with cash. Jones reportedly made $18 million in the NBA.
He says the facility went ahead with the sale anyway and now he’s out 1/4 of his beloved sneaker collection. He’s considering legal action. He says the outstanding bill was LESS THAN $400. My question is, how long between the time he contacted the facility before the auction. A bill that small (for him) should’ve been paid right away as soon as the mixup was realized.
Anyway, the new owner says he plans to sell the sneakers on eBay; he’s going to make quite a profit.
