David O. Brown, the Dallas police chief who is trying to help the city of Dallas heal after the Dallas shooting that took place on Saturday knows the horror of losing a child to the hands of a gun shot by a police officer. Brown’s son who’s name s also David, died in 2010 in a shootout with police.

David O. Brown is not a stranger to losing loved ones and colleagues to gun violence. The three decade veteran of the Dallas Police Department who grew up in the city became the police chief in 2010. He is well acquainted to tragedy after his former police partner was shot and killed in 1988 and his brother was killed three years later.
Only seven weeks before he was named the Dallas Police Chief, Brown’s own son, his namesake, was shot and killed on Fathers Day in 2010. Brown’s son shot a man multiple times then opened fire on police officer Craig Shaw who shot at Brown over nine times.
