Ayesha Curry went from the NBA’s sweetheart to a punchline and target for social media ridicule. The wife of Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, Ayesha built up a name for herself with her culinary skills and traits that many considered to be the prototype of an ideal wife. Things however went south along with her husband’s quest to win another NBA title. When the Warriors lost game 6 of the NBA Finals, Ayesha called the NBA “rigged” and tweeted her frustrations. Those tweets landed her in hot water, and fans continued to flood her mentions with mean tweets and photoshops after the Cavaliers won the NBA championship.
“I was just a fan in that moment so I didn’t think about the ramifications,” Ayesha tells PEOPLE. “I regret the way that I voiced how hurt I was. I felt hurt for [Steph], and I didn’t mean to offend anybody. Obviously, what I wrote is not what I think about what he does for a living.”
She admits she does let the negativity get the best of her at times. “Since all this hoopla has happened, I have been a victim of reading the comments,” she says. “It hurts my feelings because I didn’t intend to hurt anybody. I apologized for it, and I feel like people should move on. There’s a lot more serious things going on in the world.”
Ayesha expressed her hurt over the explicit and “inappropriate photoshops of her family, which only led to more. It’s best she let it ride out. Social media is not only harsh, they also have a short attention span.
