A Baltimore judge has just granted Adnan Syed a new trial. Back in 1999, Syed was convicted of first degree murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. This trial may seem familiar as it is featured on its own podcast ‘Serial.’
Back in November Syed was given a post-conviction hearing where attorney’s gave new evidence. The two new pieces included a cell phone tower that was used against Syed and also a classmate who said she saw Syed in the library at the time of the murder. His attorney Justin Brown tweeted,
WE WON A NEW TRIAL FOR ADNAN SYED!!! #FreeAdnan
Syed’s brother Yusuf released a statement over the phone saying,
“I had a feeling in my heart it was going to happen. We are just very happy. It’s not only a win for us but a win for a lot of people who are stuck in the system because it opened a lot of people’s eyes about the justice system.”
