This year’s Olympics is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, but has hit some bumps in the road in the preparation for the big event. The governor has declared a state of financial emergency and requested federal funds to help fulfill obligations.
Governor of Rio de Janeiro declared a state of financial emergency Friday, and has requested federal funds to help fulfill obligations for public services during the Olympics which is scheduled to begin August 5th.
Emergency measures are needed to avoid “a total collapse in public security, health, education, transport and environmental management,” a decree in the state’s Official Gazette said.
The state’s revenue has slumped in the last two years as the global oil prices collapsed.
Nevertheless, the government ensured all obligations are met for a successful Games.
“The state’s financial emergency in no way delays the delivery of Olympic projects and the promises assumed by the city of Rio,” Mayor Eduardo Paes said on Twitter.
