Eleven must be an omen for hip-hop after Kendrick snagged 11 Grammy noms this year and Hamilton actually WON 11 awards – almost tying the record for most Tony wins at 12 by The Producers.
Of the 11 wins, the awards garnered were Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction, and Best Choreography, with the production’s performers winning big as well.
Leslie Odom Jr. (Best Lead Actor), Daveed Diggs (Best Featured Actor), and Renée Elise Goldsberry (Best Featured Actress) all won Tonys. Now with Cynthia Erivo winning Best Lead Actress for The Color Purple, 2016 marked the first time all four awards in the musical acting categories went to people of color.
What a year for hip-hop!!
