Orlando PD gave a press conference today to discuss mass murderer Omar Mateen, and cleared up some previous incorrect reports. The death toll has been moved down to 49 from the originally reported 50, as it’s Mateen himself that’s actually the 50th person killed. They also revealed that Mateen had plans to keep going, which prompted their decision to take him out, despite the fact that he was holding hostages.
In a related update, CNN’s Chief National Security correspondent, Jim Sciutto, tweeted that a US official says there is NO evidence that supports claims that Mateen had contact or communication with ISIS central. However, he also notes that to be an ISIS recruit, “lone wolves are equally powerful weapons for them” and they don’t necessarily have to be in contact.
