Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook has bowed out of the 2016 Olympics in Rio today. What does this mean for Team USA?
Westbrook joins a growing list of athletes who are opting out of the Olympics this year in Brasil. Most have good excuses…an injury here, a rest there…but I still say, it’s all about the Zika virus. This is my own personal conspiracy theory, but seriously, why take the chance? So far, Steph Curry, LaMarcus Aldridge, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, and John Wall have all chosen to forego Rio. Who’s left on Team USA?
Here’s Russell’s official statement:
“After speaking with my family, I have decided to not participate in this year’s Olympics. This was not an easy decision, as representing my country at the World Championships in 2010 and the Olympics in 2012 were career highlights for me. I look forward to future opportunities as a member of USA Basketball.”
