While the sports world is completely focused on Louisville, Kentucky today for the funeral service of Muhammad Ali, we lost another legendary figure in hockey star, Gordie Howe, who passed away early this morning at age 88.
@IamJoeSports
Howe, the legendary Hall of Fame Canadian right wing known for his scoring prowess, his willingness to fight, and his career longevity playing 25 of his 26 NHL seasons for the Detroit Red Wings – died Friday morning in Ohio.
Howe is pretty much the reason Hockey became what it did, before stars like Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux were ever a blip on the radar of the media and fans. Howe held most NHL records until Gretzky came along and broke most of them.
Howe was a 23-time All-Star in the league, and played an astounding 26 seasons in the NHL (still a record) … plus another 6 in the World Hockey League. His 1,767 NHL games played is also a record.
He suffered a severe stroke back in 2014 but his family had said he recovered well from that. RIP to another legend.
