Vanderbilt University pitcher Donny Everett was one of the best professional pitching prospects in the NCAA but sadly he won’t get to fulfill his dream of playing in the majors after he tragically drowned yesterday. He had just finished his freshman year at the school after deciding to go to college, despite being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers while being named the player of the year in Tennessee during his senior year of high school.

A Coffee County emergency dispatcher said emergency crews were called to a drowning in Normandy Lake about 5 p.m. The sheriff’s office and an emergency squad ambulance were sent to the scene, the dispatcher said.

Normandy Lake, which is located in Manchester, is about 44 minutes southeast of Murfreesboro by car. It is a popular spot for fishing and swimming.

The Commodores are scheduled to play in an NCAA Regional game against Xavier on Friday night. Vanderbilt spokesman Rod Williamson told The Tennessean that the status of Friday’s game has not yet been decided.

Everett, who was a standout at Clarksville (Tennessee) High School, was considered to be a potential first-round pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft but remained steadfast in honoring his commitment to Vanderbilt.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
