For a long time LeBron James aka “King James” has been the face of the NBA. He was considered unbeatable and the undisputed best player in the world. Recently Stephen Curry has seemingly taken over. Curry has been considered by most as the best shooter ever and the success of his Golden State Warriors has added to his legacy; most notably them knocking off the 96′ Bulls and finishing at 73-9 this past season. Now as the reigning two-time MVP, and the reigning NBA champ entering the NBA Finals for the second year in a row against James, Curry was asked about replacing LeBron as the “face of the NBA”.
“It’s really annoying for me,” Curry said Wednesday. “That’s not what I’m playing for, to be the face of the NBA or to be this or that or to take LeBron’s throne or whatever. You know, I’m trying to chase rings, and that’s all I’m about. So that’s where the conversation stops for me.”
“I’m not in the business of ranking or debating who is what,” Curry said. “At the end of the day it’s about winning, and the fact that we won a championship last year and were the last team standing, obviously, is what was most important to me.”
The other half of the Splash Brothers, Klay Thompson offered an opinion as to why the casual fan might prefer Curry and it’s an opinion I and many others agree with.
“I think it might be easier for the common fan to relate to Steph because it’s hard to be 6-8, 260 [pounds] and have a 40-inch vert and be the fastest guy on the floor,” Thompson said. “So, I mean, the casual fan might relate better to Steph because he doesn’t have that athletic, just God-given ability. It’s tough to say. It’s just personal preference, honestly.”
LeBron James is an absolute beast; he works hard but he also has a stature and god-given ability that can’t be duplicated. Curry also has god-given ability but he’s smaller and most think with practice they can become a great shooter too.
This NBA Finals rematch will definitely have heavy implications in this conversation.
