EColi

Earlier this month doctors tested the urine of a 49 Pennsylvanian woman and found a strain of E. coli different from any other. What made this strain different is that it was resistant to anti-bio-tic treatment. Doctors fear that this may be the end of anti-bio-tics.

Doctors were aware of the bacteria being present in other nations around the world. However they have feared for a while that the strain would make it’s debut one day in the US. Earlier this month there nightmares came to life. A woman’s urine was tested and was found to have a drug resistant strain of E. coli. The bacterial disease usually stemming from the eating of uncooked meat is treated with Colistin. This strain however was resistant to Colistin. This woman is only part of the doctors nightmares.

The most dangerous thing is not the bacteria as a whole but the gene within it which is Colistin resistant. That gene is mcr-1. See the E. coli, although resistant to Colistin, can be treated with other antibiotics. But the fear is that the mcr-1 gene may spread to other, much deadlier, bacteria. My hopes is that the scientist find a way to curb this and prevent it from ever becoming an epidemic.
