Krystal Lake, a student at Staten Island College, recently wore an “America Was Never Great” hat at her Home Depot job and received a ton of backlash, some of which were racist death threats smh.

Even though she’s in the media studies field, Krystal Lake never expected to go viral anytime soon, especially for something that is “just a hat”. Lake, a Bernie Sanders supporter, says she wore it to fight the lie that America was great once upon a time, unlike her Trump-supporting neighbors in Staten Island think. But leave it to social media to take stuff to the extreme. She immediately got tweets like:
Dear @HomeDepot employee wearing this hat,
If it was "never great," then why haven't you moved yet?
Sincerely, Tim pic.twitter.com/vqMzn2obVL

She then says the comments got a little more extreme as she started receiving death threats and many racist-like comments.
“I’ve been getting a lot of I hate you’s and me getting the n-word left and right. A lot of people have been like, you need to go back to Africa. America was great when your people wasn’t here”.
But as time went on, support eventually came here way; from close friends to random people in the internet.
Take a look at the video below to see her share her thoughts on the whole incident. If you want a first hand look at all of the nasty comments she’s been getting, just take a peek at the comment section, some of it will surprise you.
