The British Bomb Squad was called to the Manchester United soccer match today at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester City. A mysterious package was spotted and at first two sections of the stadium were cleared. The seriousness of the situation intensified when the entire stadium was abandoned. Manchester officials have now released a statement saying that the Bomb Squad had to force a controlled blast. More on the story after the jump.
Today the British soccer club Manchester United was supposed to play against Bournemouth in what would have been the clubs final game of the season. If the game was won by United and there rivals would have lost overseas then the team would qualify for next years Champion league. However the results of this game would never come about. The game would first be delayed before kickoff due to a mysterious package. Authorities first only cleared out two sections of the stadium. After the British Military was called in later the entire stadium would be cleared. The bomb squad went ahead and made the decision to carry out a controlled blast. After the situation the Premier League issued the following statement via there website.
“The decision to abandon the Manchester United versus AFC Bournemouth match was taken after the police advised of the necessity to deal with a suspect package”
“When it comes to matters of security it is obviously right that Manchester United and the Premier League place the safety of supporters and employees foremost.”
“The Premier League will seek to rearrange the fixtures as soon as practically possible and will advise fans accordingly. It is always the last resort to abandon one of our fixtures and while we apologise for the inconvenience caused to fans we are sure, in the circumstances, they will appreciate the need to do so.”
