The Opa-locka Hialeah Flea Market in Miami stole more than 13 million dollars since it started its food stamp scheme. I’m surprised they didn’t get caught sooner because of how openly they were in constant contact with the government.

The way the plan worked was basically the customers who had food stamps would go to the flew market, which literally acted like an ATM. The people at the market would over charge the customers an extra fee from their EBT cards and then ask the government for a reimbursement of the money. It was literally that easy. They’re operation worked perfectly fine and after 13 million you would think you would try to keep it under the radar and chill but that wasn’t the case.
The feds finally caught up to them. They labeled this type of scheme as “Food Stamp Trafficking”. It is reported that identity theft could also be a part of the crimes committed. 15 of the 22 people were arrested in this bust, 7 are still on the loose. But the feds aren’t stopping there. Their next targets and are those customers who decided to use their EBT for exchange of money instead of food.
