Kim Dong Chul, a South Korea born American citizen was sentenced to 10 years of hard labor for spying. The prosecutors wanted a 15 year hard labor sentence, similar to the American student from the University of Virginia Otto Frederick Warmbier for removing a political banner from a hotel.

Kim said he was spying on “South Korean conservative efforts.”. So in theory, he was spying to see if North Korea would ever try and fire any missiles or try any harm of some sorts to South Korea.

“I was asked “I was tasked with taking photos of military secrets and scandalous scenes,” he said. “They asked me to help destroy the North Korean system and spread propaganda against the government.”
