Steve Kerr was just announced as NBA coach of the year and even though the Warriors won a record 73 games, the award going to Kerr has some people scratching their heads.

Kerr missed the first 43 games of the season has he dealt with health issues of his own, namely his back and fighting severe migraines. While Kerr was out, Luke Walton led the team to a record of 39-4 and had them well on their way to beating the Bulls record. Some folks will even go as far as to say whoever was coaching the Warriors didn’t really matter since it was the players themselves taking care of business.
Kerr finished second in Coach of the Year balloting behind Atlanta’s Mike Budenholzer last season, which was Kerr’s first season as a head coach. That team went 67-15 en route to winning the Warriors’ first championship in 40 years. He is also the first Warriors coach to win the award since Don Nelson did it back in 1992.
Others receiving votes were Gregg Popovich, Terry Stotts of the Blazers, Brad Stevens of the Celtics and even Luke Walton but ultimate it went to Kerr. Even though he did miss more than half the season, you can still see why he would receive the award based on the overall performance of the team since he came there last year.
