Adam LaRoche made major headlines when he decided to retire and walk away from the Chicago White Sox after they asked him to stop bringing his son to the clubhouse everyday. Had LaRoche played for just six more months, he would’ve received $13 million. Many people applauded him for putting his family first while others criticized him for being absurd, citing that other people can’t bring their children to work either. LaRoche opened up about the situation with ABC News.
LaRoche’s son, Drake attended the clubhouse pretty much everyday, doing chores for the other players and even had his own locker next to his dad’s.
LaRoche says in March, he was approached by the team’s executive vice president, Kenny Williams, who initially asked him to limit the amount of times he brought his son and then told him not to bring Drake at all.
He says 20 minutes after that conversation, he considered retiring and then announced his retirement a few days later. LaRoche says money was not a huge factor when making his decision.
He also says the situation with his son was not the only factor in his decision to retire. He spent 10 days undercover in the red light districts of Southeast Asia with a nonprofit group, helping victims of sex trafficking. He now wants to continue that work.
