Former New Orleans player Will Smith was shot and killed after what appeared to be a road rage incident. His wife was also shot but survived. The aftermath of the shooting was caught on tape by New Orleans resident,Christopher Nit Sheffield.
The wife of the former Saints player, Racquel, can be heard shouting for an ambulance in the video, crying, “My leg has been shot.” As the camera pans, police appear to be patting down Cardell Hayes, the accused shooter.
The initial report says the suspect Cardell Hayes was driving a Hummer that rear-ended Smith’s Benz and also caused Smith to hit the car in front of him which was carrying people Smith knew. Hayes and Smith then exchanged words and Hayes pulled out a gun shooting Smith several times and his wife Racquel was shot in the leg. Smith was seen slumped over the steering wheel with his feet on the pavement. His wife was on the ground.
Hayes’ attorney says his client was not the aggressor and implied that Smith was under the influence. There was also a second report released saying Hayes used to work for the Saints doing security and the shooting may not have been random. On the fateful night, Smith also dining with a police officer, Hayes named in a lawsuit for unlawfully killing his father.
Hayes was charged with second-degree murder. Surely more details will be coming out about this case.
A video was also released of the 911 caller describing what he saw.
