The United States Coast Guard seized a semisubmersible carrying 12,800 pounds of cocaine after being alerted by a Customs and Border Protection aircraft flying overhead, which was tallied at a valued $203 million. The four crewman aboard were stopped by authorities off the coast of California, when the Coast Guard went on to make the big discovery of all the crack cocaine they were trying to smuggle, according to The Mirror. Gotcha!
Pacific Area commander Vice Admiral Charles Ray stated:
“Transnational organized crime groups continue to adjust their tactics to avoid detection indicated by a recent rise in the use of SPSS vessels. Despite these efforts, we will continue to execute an offensive strategy that targets, attacks and disrupts these dangerous criminal networks.”
Apparently this type of smuggling has been going on for years, forcing the Coast Guard to approach the issue more aggressively. Since July 2015, they have nabbed 5 underwater vessels carrying narcotics.
