Governor Chris Christie is now demanding that President Obama make Assata Shakur return to the United States. Shakur fled to Cuba in 1984 after she was convicted for the death of a NJ state trooper Werner Foerster. Since Obama went to Cuba last week.
In the letter, Christie called Shakur by her real name. He said Joanne Chesimard is a “remorseless and free” convicted criminal for” the way that she killed the trooper.
The letter read,
“I am asking the president to purposefully put aside his priorities of enhancing trade and travel with Cuba and stand up for the more important values of the United States as defenders of democratic liberty, rule of law and human rights.True progress would put an end to the safe haven Cuba is providing to a convicted killer,” Christie continued on to say before addressing the President directly. Mr. President, if your investment in Cuba is to see any valuable returns, reforms that protect human rights and advance our principles of freedom must take precedence over economic gain. By our own democratic principles, Chesimard should not be free and must be returned home.”
This isn’t the first time that Christie has spoke about Shakur. He mentioned it after Cuba said there was no extradition treat between the and the U.S. The White House has not yet responded to the letter.
