The Lakers are “very seriously” investigating a claim made by a woman who says two of their players, Nick Young and Jordan Clarkson, sexually harassed her.
Alexis Jones posted a picture on her social media accounts claiming a Jeep with four men pulled up beside her at a stoplight and started making “vulgar, sexual” gestures towards her 68-year old mother. She claimed to not know who there were at first and posted the picture on Twitter asking for help identifying them. It was clearly Nick Young and Jordan Clarkson in the photo which commentators told her.
“She was super rattled. That’s the truth. It scared her,” Jones said. “We were in a small car, and they were in a big Jeep, and it was a bunch of big dudes. They’re leaning out of the car and making vulgar, sexual gestures. My mom was really shocked. That immediately turned into sobbing.”
Jones is an author and co-founder of the nonprofit I AM THAT GIRL. “The irony is I created a program called ‘ProtectHer’ out of the urgency to address sexual abuse in athletics, and I was on phone calls with the NBA as of Friday talking with them about integrating this message and this program into the NBA.”
Nick Young took to his Twitter account and inferred that she was lying (tweet was later deleted but is in the gallery). Many Lakers fans agreed with him and noted that she made the accusations in order to further push her nonprofit.
Jones says she received a call from John Black, the Lakers spokesman and he apologized on behalf of them and suggested the possibility of Jones speaking to the Lakers about the topic she has spent the past two-and-a-half years traveling the U.S. to speak to collegiate athletes about: respect and treatment of women. She says she can’t wait to work with the NBA on inspiring more respect.
