Phil Jackson has constantly reiterated since joining the Knicks franchise that he has no desire to coach and those days are behind him. With the Derek Fisher experiment proving to be a disaster and the team not being sold on interim coach, Kurt Rambis for next year, there have allegedly been talks between Phil and the front office about maybe coaching next year. However if he did, the Knicks would still need another coach as well.

Phil is obviously up there in age now so the travel that comes along with being a coach would likely be too much for him to handle. With that considered there have been talks about him coaching home games only and letting Rambis coach on the road.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne had the story:

Those close to him say Jackson seems more energized these days. He has lost about 20 pounds of the 30 he gained during his first two years on the job. Even Kobe Bryant noticed, remarking after Sunday’s game in Los Angeles that, “He looks great. Physically he looks good. I’m happy for him.”

There’s even talk Jackson could offer to coach home games next season, with Rambis coaching the road games. It’s an offer the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss once flatly rejected, but it could be an interesting compromise to hiring Rambis as the head coach next season.

This would be an unprecedented move in the NBA and it would be difficult to forecast how it would turn out but you would have to think it could get difficult at times. Players would never be really sure who to listen to overall.

Also, would Phil even have the passion night in and night out in the Garden to make something like this worth it? Time will tell I guess. One thing for sure if things certainly can’t get much worse in New York.
