Jamie Gilt, a 31-year old mother and an outspoken advocate for gun rights runs a Facebook page called “Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense”, which was dedicated to her love for guns. One of her most notable quotes is: “My right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun.”
Well, you just failed miserably protecting your child and yourself.
Ms. Gilt was accidentally shot as she drove her pickup truck in rural Putnam County, Florida, as a shot went through the back of the driver’s seat and hit her. Although she’s expected to survive and was hospitalized in stable condition, the baby boy was not harmed.
The New York Daily News reports only a day before she was shot, Gilt posted on Facebook:
“Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22.”
Photos from her Facebook page show her holding her child in one arm and a gun in the other.
Jamie Gilt could end up facing misdemeanor criminal charges in the shooting. Florida law states it’s a misdemeanor for a person to store or leave a loaded firearm in such a manner that it is likely a child could gain access to it. The sheriff’s office is currently investigating how the child got the gun and where Gilt had it in the truck. Officials also say they won’t file any criminal charges until Gilt’s condition improves from the gunshot wound.
