The North Carolina rapper officially recieved the news today, one day before the biggest night of his career perhaps – the 2016 Grammy Awards where he has been nominated for several awards.
The certifications come after the RIAA finally have decided to factor both audio and video streams into determining gold and platinum certification statuses. Other artists to reap these benefits are also the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and Wale.
RIAA CEO and Chairman Cary Sherman said in a statement:
“We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications. Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today.”
It was also revealed that Nicki Minaj’s album The Pinkprint has been declared double-platinum and Future’s Dirty Sprite 2 has been certified gold.
