At this point, the leak just occurred. So, not much information can instruct experts on next steps. Governor Cuomo decided to conduct an investigation. The groundwater radiation levels surrounding Indian Point are 65,000 times higher than usual. This number alone scares most people.
Indian Point leaked in the past as well.
Cuomo released the following statement:
“This latest failure at Indian Point is unacceptable and I have directed Department of Environmental Conservation Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos and Department of Health Commissioner Howard Zucker to fully investigate this incident and employ all available measures, including working with Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to determine the extent of the release, its likely duration, cause and potential impacts to the environment and public health.”
Honestly, this may mark the end of Indian Point’s contract providing energy to New York. With so many instances of radioactive leaks repeatedly happening make it pretty clear something serious needs to change about how the facility runs. Maybe this means a whole new staff. But, maybe this really means closing the entire place down. Maybe New York can borrow some power from Egypt’s new Sahara Desert solar panels.
