One of the best rappers of the current generation sat down with Billboard for a recent interview, in which Kendrick said that he believes To Pimp a Butterfly is better than good Kid, m.A.A.d City. Hit the jump for more.
In the interview, Kendrick Lamar talked about his Grammy nominations, Drake and Kanye West’s social media presence, and his new album. While talking about the 2014 Grammys, Kendrick said he didn’t feel as bad for not winning that year knowing that good Kid, m.A.A.d City wasn’t his best project.
[The Grammy defeats] would have been upsetting to me if I’d known that was my best work, if I had nothing new to offer. good kid, m.A.A.d city is great work, but it’s not my best work. To Pimp A Butterfly is great. I’m talking about the connection the record made. good kid, m.A.A.d city made a connection. But To Pimp A Butterfly made a bigger connection.
I agree with Kendrick on this one. I feel that many fans never heard Kendrick before good Kid, m.A.A.d City, so the album provided a huge surprise factor to the majority of the public. However, for fans that listened to Kendrick since the Kendrick Lamar EP knew what the Compton rapper was capable of.
With that being said, I actually think Section. 80 and To Pimp A Butterfly is better than good Kid, m.A.A.d City. It’s probably just the hipster in me.
