A number of men burst into the foyer of the Regency Hotel in Dublin dressed in police uniforms and armed with what by-standers said looked like AK47s. Inside the weigh in for a boxing match tomorrow was taking place. The headliners for Saturday’s fight at the National Arena in Tallaght are Jamie Kavanagh versus Joao Bento, fighting it out for the WBO European Lightweight Title, which is currently unclaimed. The fight is now cancelled.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene and at least five other people were taken to hospitals, with a couple of them having very serious injuries.
There is a large garda presence (Irish Police) now at the scene and gardai have begun investigating the incident.
The scene is sealed off and a technical examination of the area is expected to take place. The suspects are currently on the run and police at least for now don’t seem to have many leads.
