The NFL will be implementing a “Rooney Rule” to give woman a fair chance at executive positions, league commissioner Roger Goodell said at the NFL Women’s Summit on Thursday.
The Rooney Rule currently in place, which was established in 2003, requires the NFL to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations positions. A similar rule will apply for women seeking front office positions.
Last month, the Buffalo Bills made history when they hired Kathryn Smith as the league’s first full-time female coach.
Goodell did not specifically state when the rule will come into effect.
Some people will welcome the change while others will groan about their issues with affirmative action. Just remember, the rule means they must be interviewed not hired.
