As the 88th Academy Awards approach, the #OscarsSoWhite controversy continues to rear it’s ugly head. While many actors are calling for a boycott of the awards, President Obama has decided to share his thoughts about the boycott and the film industry’s diversity crisis. In an interview with KABC‘s David Ono, Obama pleaded with the industry to take creating “one American family” seriously. He said, “I think that when everybody’s story is told, then that makes for better art.”

President Obama explained, “As a whole, the industry should do what every other industry should do, which is to look for talent and provide opportunity to everybody,” he continued, “I think the Oscar debate is really just an expression of this broader issue of ‘Are we making sure that everybody is getting a fair shot?'”
