Monday (January 25) President Obama announced a ban on solitary confinement for juveniles in the federal prison system. According to the POTUS the practice is overused and causes devastating psychological consequences.
In a statement regarding his reform, Obama stated, “How can we subject prisoners to unnecessary solitary confinement, knowing its effects, and then expect them to return to our communities as whole people?” adding “It doesn’t make us safer. It’s an affront to our common humanity.”

Preisdent Obama’s reform will also ban federal correction officers from punishing prisoners who commit “low-level” infractions with solitary confinement. This reform applies to roughly 10,000 federal who are currently in solitary confinement and 13 juveniles.
