IFWT_Black Monday

Today is the legendary Black Monday where underperforming teams usually fire their head coaches and other members of the front office staff.  This year however, some teams decided not to wait for today and got the ball rolling early.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired their head coach Chip Kelly before their week 17 game against the Giants with owner Jeffrey Lurie citing they had high hopes for the team, especially this year but fell short of expectations.

The Miami Dolphins fired their head coach Joe Philbin after an early-season three-game losing streak.  Their interim head coach Dan Campbell will not be hired on a permanent basis.  Mike Shanahan will interview for the position on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt was fired early in the season as well after going 1-6.  Interim coach Mike Mularkey has since gone 2-6.  It’s a possibility that Mularkey will get the permanent position but not solidified.

The San Francisco 49ers fired head coach Jim Tomsula on Sunday after they beat the Rams 19-16.  Tomsula coached the 49ers for just one season and finished with a 5-11 record at the bottom of the NFC West.  Tomsula’s hiring came after the widely unpopular firing of Jim Harbaugh.  Chip Kelly has expressed interest in the job and is reportedly being given consideration.  They are also exploring the idea of hiring Saints head coach Sean Payton.

The Cleveland Browns fired head coach Mike Pettine on Sunday after losing to the Steelers 28-12 and finishing with a 3-13 record at the bottom of the AFC North.  Browns also fired GM Ray Farmar.  There’s total disorganization in their camp.  No one can locate QB Johnny Manziel and owner Jimmy Haslam says he, his wife Dee and consultant Sashi Brown will hire the new coach and then the coach will help hire the GM, AND the GM will not decided who’s on the team.  Insane.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to fire coach Chuck Pagano today and New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin is expected to resign.
