The hip-hop industry (and music industry in general) has a reputation for being degrading and disrespectful towards women. However, according to rap legend MC Lyte, the tides are turning and artists are beginning to change the norm when it comes to how women are referenced in their music. One artist, who has really caught MC Lyte’s attention when it comes to this is Fetty Wap.
Check out what she had to say about Fetty and his positive attitude towards women below.
During a discussion at the White House Council on Women and Girls, MC Lyte explained her view of Fetty being a great example of how artists can respect women in rap music. She said “He may have a very unique way of presenting his ideas, but he does love women,” adding, “For what he’s up against in this climate with all of the other emcees, he’s taking a stand. He’s being pretty courageous right now with what it is that he presents in his music. Because it’s really not the norm.”
Lyte also used Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, Common, and Talib Kweli as further examples of artists who rap/sing about women in a respectful way, urging all others to follow their lead and take responsibility for the content of their lyrics. She rounded out her point saying, “You win the challenge when you’re able to get your message across without degrading your sister.”

Do you agree with MC Lyte? Should more artists take a stand and be more respectful towards women or is that just the nature of hip hop? Sound off in the comments.
