Long Beach California State University student, Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, is the first American to be identified in the killings that left Paris in a frenzy Saturday night.
Gonzalez was in France’s capital, studying abroad as a junior at the State College of Design in a selective program. It is not yet clear how or when she died at the hands of the Islamic State.
Jane Close Conoley, the college’s president, issued a statement:
“I’m deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Long Beach State University student Nohemi Gonzalez. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this sad time. Our university stands with our nearly eighty foreign exchange students from France as they struggle with this tragedy. We will extend all support necessary to comfort them. We will also extend support to all students, faculty and staff who are in need.”
Another American was also identified thankfully not among the deceased, but of the wounded. That woman is Helen Jane Wilson – who was undergoing surgery late Saturday at a Paris hospital.
Wilson was part of the Bataclan concert to hear the Eagles of Death Metal band perform Friday night when gunmen took over the event, killing 89 people. Wilson revealed to The Associated Press she was shot in the leg and was heading into surgery at L’hopital Saint-Antoine. Wilson is originally from Los Angeles, California.
