The New York Mets put up a tough fight in Game 1 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. Game 2 was a blowout in favor of the Royals and Game 3 was the exact opposite, a blowout for the Mets. No one knew what to expect for Game 4, but in order to stay in it, the Mets definitely needed to take the W.

Unfortunately, after missing basic plays, the Mets fell to the Royals, 5-3.

The Mets started out with the lead for Game 4 and fans that packed Citi Field Stadium were sure that they’d leave and the Mets would be 2-2 in the series. After two missed balls by second basemen, Daniel Murphy, the Mets fell to the Royals, setting the series at 3-1 Royals.

There were three plays in the Halloween matchup that essentially lead to the New York loss.

The Mets were up 3-1 when a ground ball rolled right beneath Murphy’s glove and into the outfield. Tie game. Mistake #1.

Soon after, KC’s Mike Moustakas clipped a ball right to Murphy who, again, missed the ball and allowed KC to take the lead. Mistake #2.

It was the bottom of the 9th and the Mets only needed two runs to tie the game. With Murphy on first, Yeonis Cespedes approached the plate with only one out. Cespedes, who has been struggling to find his swing, hit a line drive into right field to put he and Murphy on first and second.

Here’s where the mistake comes in. Luca Duda hits one right to third basemen, Moustakas who caught the ball in the air. Murphy ran back to second, but it was Cespedes who had taken off, likely with thoughts of getting to third, who was beat out by the throw to first, resulting in a double play and the end of the game.

In multiple interviews, the Mets confirmed that they can only blame themselves, not one player, but the team as a whole.

Mets fans are coming to the sad conclusion that the World Series is over, unless the Mets win the next three games. Its not impossible, but highly unlikely.

The Mets and Royals will play again tonight at Citi Field. Game 5 will air at 8:15 p.m. on Fox.
