As if FanDuel is not in enough trouble already, Washington Redskin, Pierre Garçon has just added fuel to the fire. Garçon filed a lawsuit against the fantasy league company for using his name to make more money!
New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, opened an investigation on FanDuel and Draft Kings on grounds that would have involved the employees for both companies making money while using intel that would be unavailable to outside gamblers.
Washington receiver, Pierre Garçon has added to the company’s troubles by filing his own lawsuit against FanDuel. According to USA Today, the suit was filed for Fan Duel’s unapproved use of player names and likenesses to promote and profit from.
FanDuel and Garçon had a business partnership last year, but after the deal was terminated, the company continued to use his name and entice new subscribers.
The lawsuit reads,
“This case is about FanDuel trying to profit on plaintiff Garcon’s success, and that of other NFL athletes, without compensating them.”
People are speculating and wondering why FanDuel was the only company sued as opposed to Draft Kings, who has a licensing and marketing agreement with the NFL, and agreement that FanDuel does not have. The suit could be an easy way for Garçon to make some money and apparently, the employees at FanDuel feel that the lawsuit was unwarranted.
FanDuel stated,
“There is established law that fantasy operators may use player names and statistics for fantasy contests. FanDuel looks forward to continuing to operate our contests which sports fans everywhere have come to love.”
Gambling is always tricky, especially when your bet comes down to the performance of another person. I guess its only right that the performer receives a cut.
