The collapse was due to the demolition being performed on the building, which was clearing way for a new hotel. Seventeen other construction workers of the crew managed to escape without injury before the building fell at 10:30 a.m. The site is located at 25 West 38th St., just north of the Empire State Building.

A source revealed the unidentified man was buried under a slab of concrete as the building fell in a V-shape formation. “We literally brought world-class medicine right to his side,” said Lt. Jonathan Negron, one of the one-site medics. First responders had 2 I.V.’s connected to the man, pumping medicine into his veins. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition.

Firefighters, Emergency Service Unit cops and medics all collaborated in the effort to free the survivor. “It was a team effort,” said ESU Sgt. Michael Edwards. “It was a feeling of elation when he was freed. We’re very happy he got out.”

Witnesses say the collapse was very sudden as well as silent. A neighbor James Maldonado, 63, stated “I didn’t hear a bang, I didn’t hear a boom, I notice there people in construction uniforms running down the block very fast … and I saw some dust flying.”

The building’s owners recently switched demolition companies two weeks prior to the collapse due to a dispute over money. The contractor working on the project obtained city approval in May for demolishing the building, with no current work violations, according to Buildings Department records.
