Earlier this month, Drake’s “Hotline Bling” was on a steady climb on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It’d gotten all the way up to number two, and was looking like it may finally be the FIRST number one record for Drizzy ever (can you believe that?)! Naturally, he was excited.
“I spend my life trying to make waves for the city I am from,” he wrote on Instagram a few weeks back. “No accolades really matter to me other than the fact that I have never had a billboard number one. If I get my first number one during the month of October it will be the biggest moment of my career to date (in my mind)…”
The following week, he’d strategically release the video to the song, complete with hilarious dance moves that guaranteed viral memes and Vines for weeks to come, and conversations galore. Surely, that would give the song that push to number one, right? Nope, and it seems that Apple Music is the reason why.

As you know, Drake is in an exclusive deal with Apple Music, and he released his video to the platform first, before bringing it to YouTube. Unfortunately, this meant that the streaming numbers are not reported to Nielsen Soundscan (Wow – didn’t even know they counted numbers for videos,) and this week, Drake remains at at number two, while The Weeknd’s “The Hills” is still at number one for a sixth week. (Hmm, wonder if he feels a way about that!) And he stands no chance for next week, as the charts will welcome Adele’s “Hello.”
It’s definitely a bummer for sure, but I know Drake has a ton of future hits in him. Wonder if this will change what he plans to do with Apple Music going forward, though?
